busy bee

Really busy with moshis and rainbow fairies et al but here is something a little bit different from the usual tweenie stuff I'm doing. My friend Jules took some photos recently that I nabbed for a book, and then he needed an illustration for an ebook he is writing. A bit of Totnes-style bartering. Makes a change from those moshis...

On being a philistine...

This weekend I ended up going to see the Turner prize exhibition at Tate Britain. I'd actually been trying to go to the Pre-Raphaelites but didn't realise you couldn't just turn up and go in. So we thought, well, we are here now....

....and I just didn't get it.

Now, I know I haven't been to art school and I'm not very trendy. But I do try and have an open mind about things and not one of the four artists got me excited, questioning or emotional in any way. I was just flummoxed by why and what is considered great art. (To be fair, I skipped the 93 minute film about RD Laing because it was halfway through and we didn't have time to wait for the next showing - but it was also slightly irritated by the fact that there was an expectation that you would site around for 3 hours to 'see' one of the exhibits)

So if anyone can explain... please do. What am I missing?

However, I did get Sam some very exciting air pens as a present and this is what he made for me from them... much cooler than anything I saw (IMHO)

for my lovely friend Helen (who I have known for over 30 years), I ventured into scary waters and painted a portrait of her daughter, Evie, who has just turned three. It was hard, sometimes frustrating, (had to redo the mouth about 8 times) but ultimately satisfying... who knows, I may even try another!

Illustration Friday - Book

An oldie - Me and my mum in about 1978. Oil on board from a photo taken by my dad. I'm getting more and more addicted to painting and, as such, have started a Facebook page for my 'art' (my oil paintings as opposed to illustrations I guess). Please head over to and like me!! Thanks

New painting - Gilbert watching the sunset

Latest painting... I have to say I acknowledge that I'm a bit of a mad cat lady (we have three now) but I really do love painting cats. It's not very cutting edge I know but I just don't care!

Teacher - this week's illustration friday

This is an illustration I did many years ago for Mizz magazine's problem page... I based the teacher character on an old teacher of mine.

My newest painting, the brass donkey at Dartington. Whenever we go to the gardens we always have to go and pat him (or sit on him). I was thinking of putting a string of daisy chains around his neck - what do you think?

Summer Fair poster

My latest poster for the PTFA. Pinched lots of bits and bobs from the internet but it's all in a good cause so hope no-one minds...

You can always go... downtown

Sneak preview on an illustrative map I've been working on for hrp mamas, the Manhattan mom's group that was a lifesaver when we lived in New York for two years. Working on the map has made me homesick for downtown Manhattan again...

Hello again...

Sorry it's been so long... have been trying to redesign myself and it's taken me this long to work out how to do it!  Lots of other stuff has been happening, work and boys mainly, but I've also started painting in oils after attending an adult learners course, taught by the lovely and talented Suzy Fasht. I'm loving it so much and, very excitingly, have just sold my first ever painting. Here it is - it's called Reclining With Magnolias. More very soon... do start reading again!
